11. TEAM SELECTION PROCESS
Policy Objectives:
The objectives of this policy are to ensure that as a Club we:
● Maintain a fun, supportive and inclusive environment for all junior players who wish to play netball
● Recognise the needs of junior players over time as they grow and develop their skills in netball
● Help foster and develop athletic ability
● Encourage and reward effort
● Attempt to allocate players into suitable teams to ensure no player feels overshadowed and/or intimidated by stronger, more capable players and opponents
● Acknowledge that player development is optimised when playing with and against junior players of a similar skill level and when aligning coaching to the skill level and maturity of the player
● Maintain independence with our team selection processes and ensure an equal opportunity exists for all players
● Inspire our junior players and parent community with sportsmanship and a desire to achieve success across the age groups and sections we are represented in.
Selection Policy
Sanctuary Lakes Netball Association recognises that teams sometimes wish to stay together. It is not our intention to modify teams each season, however circumstances may warrant changes. For example, age of players, number of players returning in each age group, achieving positional balance in teams and the changing skill level of team members are all significant factors when selecting teams.
Team Selections will be conducted by a selection panel appointed by the committee. Selections cannot be held until after registration day each season, so that we have accurate numbers. Once teams are finalised, they will be communicated to coaches, and then communicated to all families.
Processes applicable to all players:
Players who have not registered and paid by the due date will not be eligible to play in the forthcoming season. Families having difficulty with payment should contact the Treasurer at accounts@sanctuarylakesnetball.com to organise a payment plan.
Team size will not exceed 10 players. Team size is dependent on the factors outlined above.
Altona Netball Association requires each Club to rank their teams in order to align the skills and abilities of players within the same age group so that they maintain a fair competition. The Club will endeavour to rank our teams following the Altona Netball Association guidelines for each group. However with the new grading system that Altona Netball Association has implemented we cannot guarantee that our suggested ranking will be accepted by the Association.
Allocation of players to teams will be determined per this policy, which is focussed on supporting each player‘s playing interests and skill level.
During the season and prior to the end of the season, coaches are asked to complete an assessment sheet on each player and provide a summary on the team as a whole. Along with coaches assessments each selection panel member will assess each team and players on at least 3 occasions on Saturday afternoons taking notes, grading / ranking each player. This will provide all selectors with enough information and be used as part of the selection process.
Our team selection criteria is guided by Netball Victoria along with the information provided to all clubs from Altona Netball Association on how they assess teams for grading.
An Example of ANA Grading guidelines is:-
Teams that have 4 or 5 players from the current season are classed as a team and their history of the current season goes with them.
Teams that have 3 or more rep players will be graded higher
Teams moving up an age group
Div 1 teams moving up they should be going in to div 2 or div 3
Div 2 should moving up they should be going in to Div 3
Div 3 should moving up they should be going in to Div 3 or Div 4
Div 4 should moving up they should be going in to Div 4
Teams staying in the current age group
Div 1 teams that were competitive will stay in Div 1
Div 1 teams that struggle may be moved to Div 2, however it will depend on numbers and what teams are moving to an old age group along with other relevant information.
SLNA TEAM SELECTION LEGEND:

***Important:- Player requests are looked at but cannot be guaranteed***
12. EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR OF PLAYERS, PARENTS & FAMILY MEMBERS Committee members, coaches, team managers and umpires are volunteers and should be respected at all times.

13. TRAINING & GAME DAY ETIQUETTE
Coaches are volunteers. They spend an incredible amount of time planning training and games. It is important to recognize the time they commit to their team.
● If you are unable to attend training or a game, you need to notify your coach as soon as possible via HEJA and also text them so that they know you are not available. It is important to advise the reason as to why they are unavailable.
● Players should arrive 15 minutes prior to games to ensure all players are ready to receive instructions from their coach and warm up to prevent injuries. ● If you arrive at the game after ½ time and have not notified your coach that you are running late you are not entitled to any court time. If we get a borrowed player to fill the 7th player you will not be able to take the court.
● Nails should be cut, earrings out and hair up. Any taping required should also be done. SLNA is not responsible for supplying tape for players, it is the responsibility of each player to supply their own tape.
● All persons are to respect the decisions a coach makes. If you have an issue or a concern please speak directly to your coach, however, do not approach a coach directly before, during or after the game as this is when a coach needs to concentrate on their team. The best time to do this is after training, organise a time to discuss an issue. For junior coaches we advise them that a committee member should be in attendance at any meeting with a parent.
● Parents and family members are not to criticize players (own team, club or opposition) or any officials at training or at games. This is a breach of the codes of conduct and penalties may be sanctioned.
● Only a captain is allowed to approach an umpire with any concerns. Under no circumstances are parents, family, friends, spectators or any other SLNA player allowed to do this. This is a breach of codes of conduct and also ANA rules - penalties may be sanctioned by SLNA and / or ANA.
● If a player does speak or behave inappropriately during a game, the coach will remove them from the game and advise the committee. This is a breach and penalties may be sanctioned.
● A parent acting inappropriately will be asked to leave the court by either the coach, team manager or a committee member. This is a junior sport and we must ensure adults lead by example. This is as breach and penalties may be sanctioned.
● Should any person associated with SLNA demonstrate continued poor behavior sanctions WILL BE imposed on that family.
● In the event of unacceptable behavior disciplinary action may be taken per the guidelines in the SLNA Constitution.
14. COURT TIME / ROTATIONS
Over the course of the normal season all fully paid players will be afforded equal court time. ● Each coach keeps up to date records of positions / court time / training. This is monitored by the Coach Coordinator.
● It is up to the discretion of the coach how court time is allocated.
● If a player isn’t at training, they may receive less court time during the season than those that are at training.
● If you have a fill-in player / borrowed player helping out your team for the game, they will receive no less than ¾ of a game.
● Rolling subs can be used BUT you must be fair with court time and do not take the same players off all the time. You will be required to document the time of the rolling subs in your coaches books so that we can make sure players are getting the same amount of court time during the normal season.
● If a player gets injured, is ill or doesn't not want to go back on the court that is different and needs to be documented in your coach book including what the issue is and that you explained it to the parents.
● DURING THE SEASON:- Throughout the season players MUST play a minimum of half a game in each game they play, unless injury or illness occurs.
● DURING FINALS:- Each player MUST have a minimum of 1 full quarter in a game. This must be 1 full 10 minute quarter and cannot be broken up into smaller minutes
across each quarter. An example of this is:- a player plays the whole 1st quarter (10 minutes).
o If you decide to use the rolling sub rules that is ok, however, you cannot give a player 5 minutes in 1 quarter and 5 minutes in another quarter to make up 1 full quarter.
15. BORROWED & FILL-IN PLAYERS (ONLY AFTER ROUND 3 OF GRADING) Occasionally a player may be asked to help out another SLNA team due to injury or player shortage.
● All player movements must be coordinated by the Coordinator/s.
● If you are to help out another team you will be entitled to receive no less than ¾ of a game.
● You can only play up a division or age group.
● Once you have played 3 games in the higher team you will then become a member of that team
● It is important to put fill-in or borrowed players on the scoresheet. This needs to be done prior to the game beginning and written correctly. The Altona Coordinator will advise the team manager and coach who the player will be and what needs to be written on the scoresheet. More information below.
● FILL-IN PLAYER
○ A “FILL-IN” player can play a maximum of one game per competition. There is no limit to the number of fill-in players per team
○ A “fill-in” player must satisfy the age requirements for the division in which they are playing. A fill-in player can only play up a division and not in the same or lower division.

■ EXAMPLE

A borrowed player must satisfy the age requirements for the division in which they are being a borrowed player for. A borrowed player can only play up a division and not in the ame or lower division.
○ Teams may borrow players from within the club to ensure the team has sufficient players to play the game. Such players
will be treated as a “borrowed player”.
○ Teams can play a maximum of three (3) borrowed players per game to ensure teams have a maximum of seven (7) players to take the court. Teams cannot play a borrowed player to field a team if they already have 7 players.
○ The borrowed player’s name and team or origin must be written on the scoresheet.

31. CHILD SAFETY IN NETBALL
The Sanctuary Lakes Netball Association is responsible for the observance, promotion, enforcement and monitoring of child safety in Netball Victoria policy and code of conduct. https://vic.netball.com.au/child-safety-standards/
32. Child Safety Standards
The Victorian Government announced that new Standards will commence on 1 July 2022, giving organisations time to plan, prepare and comply.
The eleven new Standards will replace Victoria’s current seven standards and principles. https://vic.netball.com.au/11-child-safety-standards
Key changes include new requirements:
● to involve families and communities in organisations’ efforts to keep children and young people safe
● for a greater focus on safety for Aboriginal children and young people ● to manage the risk of child abuse in online environments
● for greater clarity on the governance, systems and processes to keep children and young people safe.
These changes have been made to support greater national consistency, reflecting the National Principles for a Child Safe Organisation developed following the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
Sanctuary Lakes Netball Committee are working towards compliance with these standards by June 2023 and have developed an action plan to guide through the process. You can request a copy of the action plan by emailing secretary@sanctuarylakesnetball.com.au
